Hello and thank you for visiting my blog!
Being my very first post, I’d like to tell you a bit about myself and why I decided to start this blog. My name is Kerrie, and I am an interior designer. Although I work in design, I have a background in fine arts (art & architectural history/classical musicology) and that seems to infiltrate whatever aspect of design I happen to be working on. I have a passion for the visual arts whether that be an abstract expressionist piece, a pastoral Rococo image or a vast J.L. David canvas hanging in the Grand Salon in the Louvre; and an equally, if not greater passion for the architectural side of design. Throughout my life and particularly my travels, architecture and how it shapes the way we live never ceases to amaze me and inspire awe. Regardless of whether you are standing in Milan’s Il Duomo Cathedral (pictured above) or in London’s Tate Modern Gallery, the sheer volume of the space, height of the ceiling, the way light dances off the surrounding walls, how that light is allowed in and the materials used are bound to have an effect on the way you feel in that structure; and it is for those, among many other reasons, why art/design/architecture captures my attention everyday.
When I’m not designing or doing something art/design/architecture related, my husband Ryan and I love to travel; consistently and repeatedly to the Mediterranean where we both share a profound love for Italy (he in particular!) and where I have a personal loyalty to France after years of travel there and life abroad in Paris. We also enjoy boating up and down the BC coastline, dropping crab traps in front of our home, and travelling for the sake of water skiing (my husband is an avid skier, and I’m an avid sun tanner in whatever location he happens to be skiing in !) Additionally we both undertake as much philanthropic work as we are able, whether that be in the form of helping fund our sponsor child’s village in Soin, Kenya or providing fresh water for a community of women in the Samburu Desert.
In my time off, you’re apt to find me:
- Cooking (but seldom baking)
- Drinking old world wines, particularly French wines
- Walking my toy aussie cross Lupi, or playing fetch with her on the beach
- Organizing things, whether it be a drawer, dresser or closet
- Watching historical docu-dramas or culinary documentaries on Netflix
- Trying as many new restaurants as possible
Lastly, thank you to all those who have stopped by this page. I started this blog as a way to share more about how design affects my life and that of others, and also as a way to funnel my love of writing. I sincerely appreciate and will respond to every comment I’m able, and would love it if you’d become a follower and fan whether it be on my blog or on my instagram @alderside.design .
